About this work
St Stephen’s Church is a historic parish church in central Bristol and a Grade I listed building. The present church largely dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, replacing an earlier church on the site. Much of the building was rebuilt around 1470. Its distinctive tower and east window were funded by John Shipward, a four-time Mayor of Bristol, with the tower built by mason Benedict Crosse. The church originally stood beside the River Frome, close to what later became Bristol Harbour.
