About this work
St Nicholas Church stands on St Nicholas Street in central Bristol. A church has occupied the site since before 1154, although the present building was largely rebuilt between 1762 and 1769 by James Bridges and Thomas Paty in a Gothic Revival style. Parts of the earlier church survive in the 14th-century crypt. The interior was destroyed during the Bristol Blitz in 1940 and reconstructed in 1974–75 as a church museum. After the museum closed in 2007, the building was used as council offices before returning to Anglican worship in 2018.
