About this work
Church of St Thomas the Martyr, a historic church on Thomas Lane in Bristol, close to Victoria Street and Redcliffe Street. The present church was designed in 1789 by Bristol architect and carver James Allen to replace an earlier medieval church that had become unsafe. It was constructed in 1792–93 in a restrained Georgian Classical style, while the 15th-century tower of the medieval church was retained, creating an unusual combination of Gothic and Classical architecture.
