About this work
17–19 Clare Street is a distinctive late-Victorian office building beside St Stephen’s Church in central Bristol. Completed in 1899, it was designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse for the Prudential Assurance Company and is his only known building in Bristol. Designed in a richly decorated French Renaissance Revival style, the building features red terracotta, pink granite, rounded corner towers, conical slate roofs and elaborate carved detailing. Its ornate façade makes it one of the most striking historic commercial buildings in the city centre.
