About this work
The Exchange on Corn Street, Bristol, is a Grade I listed building designed by John Wood the Elder and built between 1741 and 1743. Originally created as a trading exchange for merchants, it later became a corn exchange and now forms part of St Nicholas Market. Its grand 18th-century façade features Corinthian columns, decorative carvings and a royal coat of arms. Outside are four historic bronze trading tables known as the Nails, once used by merchants to conduct business. The building is regarded as England’s only surviving 18th-century exchange of its type.
