Spanning the Avon Gorge between Clifton and Leigh Woods, the bridge opened in 1864 to a design by W. H. Barlow and John Hawkshaw, based on Isambard Kingdom Brunel's earlier plans. Work on Brunel's scheme had been halted in 1831. The deck hangs from 162 wrought-iron rods, tolls still fund its upkeep, and it is a Grade I-listed symbol of Bristol.
