Known as the Corn Exchange, The Exchange on Corn Street was built in 1741–43 by John Wood the Elder, with carving by Thomas Paty, as a trading hall for Bristol's merchants, including some engaged in the slave trade. The Grade I-listed Palladian building now houses St Nicholas Market. On the pavement outside stand four bronze 'nails', tables on which merchants once settled deals.
