The Old Council House on Corn Street was designed by Sir Robert Smirke and built between 1824 and 1827 as the meeting place and offices of Bristol's city council. Its Grade II*-listed limestone front has giant fluted Ionic columns and a statue of Justice, and inside is a black and white marble hall with a cantilevered stone staircase. It later housed magistrates' courts.
