Founded around 1129 by Robert, Earl of Gloucester, as a Benedictine priory, St James was Bristol's first religious house. Its early Romanesque nave survived the Dissolution as the parish church, and the tower was added around 1374. Now a Grade I-listed Catholic church in the Horsefair, it is also home to the St James Priory Project, which supports vulnerable people.
