Rebuilt in 1762–69 by James Bridges and Thomas Paty when the old church made way for the new Bristol Bridge, St Nicholas keeps a 14th-century crypt incorporating part of the town wall. Gutted in the 1940 Blitz, it later became a museum and council offices. The Grade II*-listed church returned to worship in 2018 and holds Hogarth's altarpiece painted for St Mary Redcliffe.
