The Church of St Stephen near the old harbour in central Bristol was rebuilt around 1470 in the Perpendicular style, its tall four-stage tower with openwork corner turrets funded by the merchant and mayor John Shipward. The Grade I-listed church has a 15th-century roof with gilded bosses, angel capitals in the nave and the 14th-century tomb of Edmund Blanket.
