About this work

SS Great Britain, preserved in the historic Great Western Dockyard in Bristol Harbour. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and built in Bristol by shipbuilder William Patterson, the vessel was launched on 19 July 1843. At the time, it was the largest ship in the world and the first large ocean-going vessel to combine an iron hull with screw-propeller propulsion, making it a major milestone in maritime engineering. After a long career carrying passengers and cargo around the world, the ship was eventually returned to Bristol in 1970 and restored in the original dry dock .
