About this work
Bristol Temple Meads opened on 31 August 1840 as the western terminus of the Great Western Railway and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It later served several other railway companies, including the Bristol and Exeter Railway and Bristol and Gloucester Railway. As rail traffic increased, the station was significantly expanded in the 1870s by Francis Fox and again between 1930 and 1935 by Percy Emerson Culverhouse. Brunel’s original terminus is no longer part of the operational station but survives as an important historic structure.
