Bristol's first public electricity supply came from this Corporation power station at Temple Back, commissioned on 20 August 1893. It generated AC for homes and DC for arc street lamps, and the name 'Central Electric Lighting Station' on the building recalls that lighting was its original purpose. By 1900 it was full, and generation moved to Feeder Road; the building has since been converted to offices.
