The former Palace Hotel on West Street in Old Market, popularly called the Gin Palace, was built around 1869 for the wine and spirits merchant John Sharp as a railway hotel for a station that never arrived nearby. The Grade II-listed building is known for the Assyrian-style figures on its facade and the sloping floor of its ornate bar.
