The Watch House stands on the south side of the Entrance Lock at Cumberland Basin, at the western end of Bristol's Floating Harbour. During each tidal watch the Deputy Harbour Master meets boat crews here to plan passages in and out of the harbour, arrange bridge swings and advise on when the stopgates will close.
