The former Seamen's Church and Institute on Prince Street opened on 10 February 1880, built at the expense of W. F. Lavington. Described at the time as Venetian in style, it had a chapel on the upper floor above the institute, serving sailors using Bristol's docks. Bomb damage in the Second World War led to a new frontage, and the building later stood derelict for decades.
